ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has announced that the first supermoon of 2025 will grace the country’s skies on October 7.
According to a SUPARCO spokesperson, the supermoon will rise from the eastern horizon shortly after sunset at 8:47 PM and remain visible throughout the night, setting in the west before dawn — giving enthusiasts ample opportunity to witness the celestial event.
Astronomical experts noted that the October supermoon will appear 6.6% larger and 13% brighter than the average full moon, particularly stunning in areas with clear, open skies.
“This is a rare opportunity for Pakistanis to enjoy the moon in all its brilliance,” the SUPARCO spokesperson said, urging the public to observe the phenomenon.
SUPARCO further revealed that 2025 will feature three supermoons — the next two expected on November 5 and December 5, with the November supermoon predicted to be the brightest of the year.
A supermoon occurs when the moon’s orbit brings it closest to Earth, making it appear unusually large and luminous.
In a related statement, the Director General of SUPARCO highlighted that the timing of the event coincides with Pakistan’s recent satellite launch, reflecting the country’s progress in space science and technology.
