Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was the 22nd Prime Minister of Pakistan. He was the head of the government from August 1, 2017, to May 31, 2018. His period in office marked by a mix of political and economic problems ten months were not enough to characterize his period in office already.
However, his dedication to the nation’s healing process from the shock that followed the very unexpected removal of his predecessor, Nawaz Sharif, was quite apparent. The events that brought Abbasi to the position of Prime Minister were rather incredible. The Supreme Court of Pakistan ruled in the Panama Papers case to disqualify Nawaz Sharif in July 2017.
The decision was the real turning point for the ruling party, PML-N, which declared the transfer of leadership to Abbasi. Abbasi was the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Resources and was seen as the person whose trust it would be to manage the affairs in a light and smart way.
Shahid Khaqan Abbasi is the chairman of Awaam Pakistan (AP), a party he currently leads. He was a Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan from October 2018 to August 2023, and prior to that, he served as a member of parliament for eight non-consecutive terms since 1988.
