Dense fog has significantly reduced visibility across Pakistan, prompting the temporary closure of several major motorways. Authorities are urging motorists to avoid unnecessary travel and adhere to safety guidelines.
The National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) reported that visibility has dropped to dangerously low levels in various regions, leading to the closure of key routes. This includes sections of Motorway M-2, M-3, M-4, M-5, and M-11, as well as portions of the E-35 Hazara Motorway, GT Road, and the Islamabad–Murree (N-75).
A spokesperson for the Motorway Police stated that these closures were implemented strictly for public safety, noting that fog-related accidents often increase due to speeding and lane violations.
The following motorway sections have been temporarily closed due to visibility falling to between 10 and 80 meters in some areas: E-35 from Burhan to Thakot, M-2 North from Islamabad to Kot Momin, and M-2 South from Kot Momin to Lahore.
M-3 Lahore to Abdul Hakeem, M-4 from Pindi Bhattian to Abdul Hakeem, and Abdul Hakeem to Sher Shah and M-5 from Sher Shah (Multan) to Zahir Pir. While M-11 from Mahmood Booti to Sambrial Toll Plaza (Sialkot).
The Motorway Police confirmed that fog intensity is typically highest during late-night and early-morning hours, making travel especially hazardous. They emphasized that fog conditions can suddenly worsen during winter.
Citizens are advised to stay informed through official advisories and to contact the Motorway Police helpline at 130 for real-time traffic updates, route guidance, or emergency assistance.
Authorities reiterated that public cooperation is crucial for ensuring road safety during the ongoing winter fog season and mentioned that additional restrictions may be imposed if visibility deteriorates again.
