LONDON: At least 82 individuals lost their lives in the United Kingdom after they were administered illegal weight loss injections, local authorities announced.

The investigations have disclosed that a network of the underworld has sold these hazardous injections to more than 2.5 million people, and they have been charging about £20 per dose. The largest number of recipients were the ones suffering from diabetes and obesity, who have ordered the products online, probably, to get rid of their weight in a short period.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), along with the government, is gearing up for a series of large-scale raids to put an end to the illegal operation.

According to British media, Karen, 53, from Manchester, passed away shortly after taking the injection. Her family said that she went for the treatment so that she could become thinner and more beautiful.

Authorities alert that black-market weight loss injections—sold under different brand names but untested have not been subjected to any scientific or medical trials. Up to now, regulators have intercepted illegal injections worth half a million pounds.
