Is the Entry of E-SIM technology replacing SIM card?

Apple has recently introduced its new iPhone Air, which is the world’s first model that can only be used through e-SIM. After this announcement by the company, the question has arisen whether the SIM card is going to be eliminated.

According to foreign media reports, everyone is aware of the SIM card, which is a small chip that provides us with access to the mobile network. Consumers around the world have been relying on this small plastic card for the last three decades, but now technology has changed its direction. The e-SIM is a digital version of the same SIM card which is inside the phone; there is no need to insert or remove it from a tray.

According to reports, Apple in the US first started selling iPhones with E-SIM only in 2022; now this facility is going to be introduced globally through the iPhone Air. This move by Apple is being considered a sign of a big change.

Technology analysts say that this is the ‘beginning of the end of the SIM card’. According to estimates by CCS Insight, 1.03 billion smartphones were using E-SIM worldwide in 2024, and this number is likely to increase to 3.01 billion by 2030.
