NEW DELHI: Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav surrendered to Tihar Jail after the Delhi High Court rejected his request for more time to surrender in connection with a conviction in several cheque-bounce cases.

According to Indian media, Yadav arrived at the jail around 4 PM, where formalities were processed. The surrender occurred a day after the high court turned down the actor’s plea for a one-week extension to settle his dues. Yadav’s lawyers had informed the court that arrangements were made to pay Rs50 million as part of a settlement and requested additional time.

However, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma declined the relief, stating no valid grounds were presented. The order followed revision petitions filed by Yadav and his wife against a 2019 sessions court decision, which upheld their conviction in cases involving bounced cheques from April 2018.

In June 2024, the high court had briefly suspended the conviction to allow Yadav time to resolve the dispute. The trial court had originally sentenced the actor to six months in jail for failing to clear his financial liabilities. His counsel argued that the cheques were issued for a business deal related to a film project that later collapsed.
