ISLAMABAD: As winter begins, cases of cold and flu are rising worldwide, including in Pakistan. Recently, a new influenza strain called the Super Flu has been detected in the country, raising alarm among experts.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that a new flu variant, A(H3N2), especially its subgroup Subclade K has caused an increase in infections across Europe, including the UK. Pakistan has also reported this strain with 20% of tested samples showing the virus.
What Distinguishes Super Flu?
The Super Flu is called this because it is affecting people than expected and because the virus has undergone mutations that increase its ability to spread. Moreover, along with the flu the common cold also circulates extensively during the season making it challenging for individuals to distinguish between the two.
The flu and the common cold are both diseases that impact the body. They arise from distinct viruses. The cold is usually caused by the rhinovirus while the flu is primarily caused by influenza viruses, mainly types A and B. It is feasible for someone to be infected with both illnesses at the same time particularly as these viruses become more widespread during the winter months.
Both illnesses spread via pathways. When someone infected coughs or sneezes, droplets containing the virus are released. The virus can also spread by objects, like doorknobs, phones or other surfaces contaminated by an infected person then touching the face.
How to Identify Common Cold vs. Flu
The symptoms of the cold and influenza are alike but important distinctions exist. A common cold is most of the time associated with symptoms such as a blocked nose, sneezing, sore throat, a mild cough, and a slight feeling of tiredness. Whereas, flu is most often followed by a fever, very tiredness and lack of energy, muscle and joint pains, headaches, dry cough, chills (cold sweats), loss of appetite, and, at times, digestive system problems such as diarrhea.
Differences in Symptoms
One of the major differences between them is the way the symptoms come up. Cold symptoms appear slowly. Tend to be mild whereas flu symptoms typically arise abruptly and are more intense. Furthermore, the flu can lead to complications such, as pneumonia while the common cold usually resolves with rest and plenty of fluids.
Complications from Cold and Flu
Either one of these scenarios can cause health problems such as ear infections, chest infections and the worsening of already existing health conditions, like asthma or heart disease.
It’s important to note that while these details are based on the latest medical research, anyone who feels unwell should consult with a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment.
