PESHAWAR: Despite a recent increase in petroleum prices, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mohammad Sohail Afridi has rejected a proposal to raise fares for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses operating in Peshawar.
The fare increase proposal was submitted to Chief Minister Sohail Afridi by TransPeshawar in response to rising operational costs. However, the Chief Minister decided not to approve the fare hike, prioritizing the public’s interest.
Finance Adviser Mazamil Aslam explained that the provincial government does not support imposing additional financial burdens on the public during these challenging times. He further emphasized that CM Sohail Afridi returned the proposal to help maintain affordable travel options for all residents, ensuring BRT services remain accessible.
On the other side, the Punjab Mass Transit Authority has announced a 33% increase in the fare for the Metro Bus services. According to the announcement, the new fares will come into effect on March 26. The fare increase applies to all BRT systems, including the Pakistan Metro Bus, with an additional Rs. 10 added to the current fare.
For the Red Metro Bus, the fare for passengers traveling between Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Multan will now be Rs. 40. Additionally, the Punjab Mass Transit Authority has stated that individuals using green transport will receive a Rs. 15 discount on their fares.
