China has rejected media reports about providing chip-making equipment to Iran, calling them ‘false information’, while clarifying the matter and adopting a cautious stance.
China’s Foreign Ministry on Friday reacted strongly to some media reports, calling them ‘false information’. These reports claimed that a major Chinese semiconductor company was providing chip-making equipment to Iran.
The report said that according to two unnamed senior officials in the administration of US President Donald Trump, Chinese contract chip manufacturer SMIC had started sending these equipment to Iran about a year ago.
During a routine press briefing in Beijing, spokesperson Lin Jian responded to the report and said that he was not aware of this specific matter.
However, he clarified that “I can only say that in recent days, some media outlets have been busy publishing news that appears to be correct but is actually false.”
China is an important partner of Iran, but it has not announced any military assistance to Tehran in the war that began after the US and Israeli attacks on February 28.
China has been continuously pushing for a ceasefire and has appealed for a reduction in tensions in the region. The Chinese company named in the report, Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), did not respond to a request for comment on the matter.
China has made it clear that it does not take unverified media reports seriously and calls recent news misleading, while maintaining its position on peace and ceasefire in the region.
