QUETTA: Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti on Saturday paid tribute to the martyrs of the Karsaz tragedy on its 18th anniversary, honouring those who laid down their lives for the cause of democracy.
In his message, the chief minister said that the Karsaz tragedy remains a dark yet defining chapter in Pakistan’s political history, as the attack on the convoy of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto was not only an assault on her but also a major blow to democratic values and the people’s struggle for their rights.
He noted that more than 150 workers embraced martyrdom for the survival of democracy, while hundreds of injured workers continue to remind the nation of their sacrifice for the supremacy of the people and the stability of Pakistan’s democratic system.
Paying tribute to Benazir Bhutto’s legacy, Bugti said she devoted her entire life to upholding democratic ideals, protecting the rights of the people, and strengthening the federation. “Her leadership was a beacon of hope, courage, and unity for the nation,” he added.
The chief minister remarked that Benazir Bhutto’s martyrdom symbolises democratic resilience and sacrifice, which gave Pakistan’s political journey a new direction. He said the martyrs of the Karsaz tragedy kept the flame of democracy alive with their blood, and today’s democratic Pakistan is a result of their perseverance.
Bugti reaffirmed that the Balochistan government stands for political tolerance, democratic strengthening, and the promotion of public harmony across the country.
Expressing full solidarity with Benazir Bhutto’s family, her comrades, and the families of the martyrs, he said the memory of Karsaz reminds the nation that democracy can only endure through sacrifice, steadfastness, and a spirit of public service.
