An animal welfare organization, Brooke, is organizing different programs to avoid the beating of working animals and expresses affection with them for their hard work and contribution in carrying heavy loads to remote areas of the mountain peaks.
Muhammad Zafar Qurishi, Regional Manager, Brooks, said that ninety-five percent of the total equine (animals carrying goods) population in Pakistan is made up of donkeys and horses, and the majority of which are used for transporting people and goods, while the rest are used in brick kilns, coal mines, and agriculture.
A recent study has shown that one working animal supports the livelihood of up to eight people in a family. With so many people relying on their working animals, it is important that they are given proper care and attention to ensure that their lives are free from pain, disease, and suffering, so that they can remain healthy and productive.
He said that this is also important for the families and communities they support, as they are left extremely vulnerable if their animals are unable to work. He said that Brook works in 44 districts of the country for the welfare of the donkeys and horses that carry heavy loads for their owners.
He said that Brooke Pakistan’s community-based equine welfare program works to ensure healthy working animals for the world’s poorest communities through service delivery, community development, advocacy, partnerships, applied research, and a ‘load sharing’ strategy.
