The Election Commission of Bangladesh announced that General election in the country will be held on February 12, 2026.
On August 5 last year, the then Prime Minister Hasina Wajid was forced to leave her 15-year term in power due to student protests. After the student protests in Bangladesh, former Prime Minister Hasina Wajid left Bangladesh and fled to India. Since Hasina Wajid fled, the interim government in Bangladesh was taken over by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.
It should be noted that on August 5, it was announced that general elections in Bangladesh would be held in February next year. According to the news agency, this announcement was made by Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus. He said that the Election Commission has been asked to hold elections in February next year.
Yunus framed the election schedule as a turning point, saying the country had moved closer to reclaiming democratic norms. “Bangladesh’s democratic journey has crossed an important milestone, strengthening the new path the nation has taken after the historic mass uprising,” he said.
The turbulence of the transition sharpened on Thursday after President Mohammed Shahabuddin, appointed to the largely symbolic post during Hasina’s tenure, announced he would resign once voting concludes. He told the news agency Reuters he intended to step aside midway through his term, saying he had felt humiliated by the Yunus government.
