PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly has established a special committee to investigate the incident that occurred at Radio Pakistan Peshawar.
This decision was made following the approval of a motion during the provincial assembly session on December 15, 2025. The committee was formed in accordance with Rule 237 of the Assembly’s Rules of Procedure.
Provincial Law Minister Aftab Alam will serve as the chairman of the special committee, which includes the following Members of the Provincial Assembly (MPAs): Tariq Saeed, Malik Adeel Iqbal, Muhammad Israr, Asif Khan, Abdul Ghani, Fazal Elahi, Samiullah, Tariq Mahmood, Ahmed Karim Kundi, Adnan Khan, Arbab Muhammad Waseem, Muhammad Nisar, Sajjadullah, and Muhammad Rashad Khan.
According to the notification, this committee will conduct a thorough investigation into the events that took place at Radio Pakistan Peshawar on May 9 and 10, 2023. The committee will examine the causes, reasons, and circumstances surrounding the incident, and will determine whether it was the result of an organised conspiracy. Additionally, a detailed review will be conducted regarding the role of law enforcement agencies and other related issues, including allegations of misconduct.
After gathering evidence and completing the investigation, the special committee will submit its report to the provincial assembly.
This report will also include recommendations for future guidelines and policymaking, which will be presented to the provincial cabinet. The notification was issued by the Speaker of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, Babar Saleem Swati.
Court summons witnesses in Radio Pakistan attack case
The Anti-Terrorism court(ATC) in Peshawar summoned witnesses and the investigation officer in the Radio Pakistan attack case.
The Radio Pakistan attack case was heard in the special Anti-Terrorism Court in Peshawar. The hearing was conducted by ATC Judge Wali Muhammad Khan. The court ordered the prosecution to appear with witnesses and the investigation officer to appear along with the case materials at the next hearing. The plaintiff also submitted a power of attorney to the court.
According to the prosecution, on May 9, 2023, angry protesters set fire to the Radio Pakistan building, after which a case was registered against more than 80 accused, including PTI members of the assembly, Meena Khan Afridi, Fazal Elahi, and Asif Khan, at the Sharqi police station.
The prosecution says that the police have completed the investigation and started the trial against the accused; however, nine accused are still absconding during the trial and are not appearing, while the prosecution witnesses have also not appeared in court yet.
The court ordered the prosecution witnesses to appear at the next hearing along with the case file and adjourned the further hearing until November 25. On May 9, 2023, during nationwide protests, angry people attacked and set fire to the Radio Pakistan building in Peshawar.
Immediately after the incident, a case was registered at the Sharqi police station, in which more than 80 people, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) members of the assembly, Meena Khan Afridi, Fazal Elahi, and Asif Khan, were named.
The named people included party workers as well as other citizens, who were charged with arson, damage to government property, and terrorism.
