An Australian-origin Pakistani was allegedly tortured by police officers in Lahore, after which provincial law minister Rana Muhammad Iqbal Khan took immediate action and ordered a transparent inquiry.
The provincial minister, while seeking a detailed report from the police officials, said that a transparent investigation into the matter should be conducted to bring out the facts, and he directed strict action against the officers involved in the torture.
The law minister said that justice should be ensured for the affected citizens at all costs, and no one will be allowed to be above the law. A case was registered against the officers who tortured him at the Tibi police station on the complaint of the affected citizen, Khawaja Zeeshan. The police said that one of the officers who tortured him, Zaheer Iqbal, was taken into custody. The plaintiff said that on October 24, three constables stopped him in the Tibi City area and started the torture. The case was registered against Constable Zaheer Iqbal and two unknown officers. After the torture, the officers also took his mobile phone and car keys. The victim said that her niece and her husband had saved their lives after reaching the police station.
The police said that a case of the incident has been registered at the Tibbi police station and an investigation has been started. DIG Operations Faisal Kamran ordered the SP City to conduct a complete investigation into the incident and also ordered the immediate suspension of the concerned official.
DIG Operations said that no one is allowed to take the law into their own hands. The SHO will also be held accountable for the violation of the law by the police station officials. There is a strict accountability system in the Lahore Police. DIG Operations said that those who exceed their powers have no place in the department.
