Asia Cup handshake controversy: what are the cricket rules in this regard?
The controversy has intensified after the traditional handshake was not held after the match between India and Pakistan. The Pakistan team players stood outside the Indian dressing room while Indian batsmen Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dubey went straight inside and closed the door. This situation was surprising for fans and cricket experts.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has immediately suspended Director of International Cricket Usman Wahla for not responding to the controversy promptly. Usman Wahla sent a letter of complaint to the International Cricket Council regarding the behaviour of the match referee and the Indian team, for which action was taken against him. It is being said that this decision was taken so that there is no weakness in Pakistan’s stance in the future.
What are the cricket laws on not shaking hands?
According to the MCC, the body that sets the rules of cricket, respect is a fundamental part of the spirit of cricket. Whatever the result, it is essential to congratulate the opposing team, enjoy your team’s successes, and thank the umpires and opponents.
The MCC further says that cricket is a game that promotes leadership, friendship and teamwork and brings players of different nationalities, cultures and religions closer to each other. This is why shaking hands after a match is not just a ritual but is considered an integral part of the ‘spirit of cricket’.
According to experts, if a team ignores this tradition, this act is not a technical violation of the rules but is definitely considered contrary to the ‘spirit of cricket’
