Pakistan Muslim League(N) leader and Minister for Kashmir Affairs, Engineer Amir Muqam, left the venue before his speech when activists of Insaf Student Federation encircled him, alleging that he is promoting politics in educational institutions.
A function was held at the University of Agriculture, Peshawar, in which Federal Minister Amir Muqam was invited as the chief guest for the laptop distribution ceremony. The purpose of the function was to distribute laptops among the students to promote educational activities; however, the situation turned tense when the workers of the Insaf Students Federation (ISF) reached there.
A large number of ISF workers raised strong slogans outside and inside the university hall. Their position was that federal ministers should not be allowed to engage in political adventures in educational institutions.
The workers tried to break the barriers and enter the function, due to which a commotion started despite tight security arrangements. The university administration and police tried to control the situation, but the discipline of the function was disrupted due to the anger of the workers and the intensity of the protest.
In view of the chaos and security concerns, Federal Minister Amir Muqam had to leave his speech unfinished. To prevent the situation from escalating further, security officials immediately escorted him out of the venue and sent him away. PML-N has strongly condemned the incident and termed it “political intolerance”. They said that the federal minister had come for educational purposes, but he was targeted.
The activists say that they were protesting against the federal government’s policies and interference in provincial affairs. The university administration has indicated that a committee will be formed to investigate the incident so that such unpleasant incidents can be avoided in the future.
