PESHAWAR: Awami National Party central president Senator Aimal Wali Khan has strongly criticised the government’s sudden increase in petroleum prices, describing it as an anti-people decision that would further burden the public.

Speaking on the recent hike, Aimal Wali Khan acknowledged that global petroleum prices have risen, but noted that the petrol and diesel currently available in the country were purchased at previous, lower rates. He said the government’s sudden increase is akin to dropping a price bomb on ordinary citizens, intensifying inflationary pressures.

He highlighted that the government is already collecting nearly Rs100 per litre in various taxes and levies on petroleum products. Imposing further increases in these circumstances, he said, is both regrettable and irresponsible.

Wali Khan warned that such a steep price hike would trigger a new wave of inflation, directly impacting the general public, labourers, farmers, and the middle class.

He added that transport, food, and daily essential prices are likely to rise, further worsening the hardships already faced by ordinary citizens.

The politician urged the government to reconsider the decision and take measures to provide relief to the public rather than imposing additional financial burdens.
