PESHAWAR: The spread of the deadly disease HIV (AIDS) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has taken a dangerous turn after the confirmation of 35 new patients, there has been a wave of concern among health experts and officials.

According to sources, the new patients belong to the southern districts, tribal areas and other different areas of the province. The total number of registered patients in the province has exceeded 4,500, while the number is said to be more than 84,000 across the country.

In view of the seriousness of the situation, the health department has expanded the scope of screening of sensitive and more affected groups and has completed special arrangements for testing the transgender community.

According to health experts, the major reasons for the rapid spread of the disease include unsafe practices, used syringes, substandard blades, and unsterilized dental instruments. The presence of the disease has also been confirmed in drug addicts.

Health experts and officials are concerned that new patients are from southern districts.
