In view of the severe cold and adverse conditions, the refugees have demanded an additional two to three months of concession from the Pakistani government due to severe winter condition in Afghanistan.
Afghan families living in camps in Peshawar and other areas say that there is severe snowfall and cold in Kabul and other areas of Afghanistan. In such a situation, migrating with children and the elderly can put their lives at risk.
The refugees have appealed that they be allowed to stay in Pakistan for at least two months (until the end of February) so that the cold wave subsides.
According to the refugees, they have been guests of Pakistan for 40 years, so instead of forcibly evicting them at this last stage, they should be given time on humanitarian grounds.
According to reports from the United Nations (UNHCR), millions of people returning to Afghanistan are facing severe shortages of food and shelter, which become even more acute in winter.
The government of Pakistan has accelerated the process of repatriating illegally staying foreigners (including Afghan citizens). Although some representatives of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had proposed concessions on humanitarian grounds, no major general concessions have been officially announced at the federal level yet.
It is Important to note that this recent demand is mostly from those who do not have legal documents or who have been ordered to return immediately.
