RAWALPINDI: A protest outside Adiala Jail turned chaotic when workers and leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) clashed with police. The protestors, who had gathered to meet PTI founder Imran Khan, were denied permission by jail authorities to visit him, sparking a violent demonstration.

According to reports, the protestors have already indicated that they will take over the protest site until they are allowed to visit Imran Khan. There was a confrontation between the police and the protestors but nothing was agreed upon. Water cannons were used by the police to push back the crowd as the situation became more and more fiery.

The protesters partially dressed in raincoats and had shopping bags on their heads for protection, exhibited their determination to endure until the termination of the sit-in.

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan stated on the protest, “We are still demanding a meeting, and struggle goes on but negotiating is the only way forward.”

During the protest, police reportedly arrested three of Imran Khan’s sisters including Aleema Khan, who was present at the protest site during the standoff.

The use of water cannon by police led to the scattering of PTI supporters, and the law enforcers occupied the site completely. In the meantime, local government has escalated security in the location to avoid any more clashes.

The demonstration at Adiala Jail was directly connected to the political issue that made it impossible for the ex-PM to be visited. The authorities managed to quickly restore order by acting decisively.
