ABBOTTBAD: The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Abbottabad has decided to take all annual examinations under the Students Learning Outcomes(SLO) system, which would enable the students to clear their concept on the basis of not only memorization but also on the basis of conceptual study.
This initiative by BISE Abbottabad is a step towards a major change in the education system, under which exams will not be conducted based on ‘what is remembered’ only, but also based on ‘what is learned’. This change also creates opportunities for students, but both innovation and hard work are required in preparation.
BISE Abbottabad has released model papers that have been prepared on the basis of the SLO. For example, a model paper has been published for the English examination of class 10.
The questions will not be based solely on the memorization of the syllabus but on what the student has learned, how he has learned it, and how much better understanding he has gained. After the introduction of the grading system, letters (e.g., A1, A, B, etc.) will be given, along with marks.
The design of the exam (model papers) will change, which will test the nature of the questions, time management, logical thinking, along focused knowledge. All schools, teachers, and students have been advised to be prepared to study according to the new system.
The board has directed the students not to limit the scope of study to just memorization and to try to understand the meaning, think about the solutions to the questions. Review the model papers and check the nature of the questions’ explanation by giving examples.
In the SLO system, it is not enough to just give the correct answer; the writing style and detail will also be important. Contact the teachers from time to time, and ensure that they are guiding the students according to the new system.
