PESHAWAR: By-election on the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa general seat of the Senate will be held on Thursday (today).

Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced that the polls for acquiring vacant Senate seat will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. without any interval, at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly building in Peshawar.

Provincial Election Commissioner Saeed Gul is also RO for the by-polls, while Joint Provincial Election Commissioner M Farid Afridi and other staff would also monitor electioneering.

It said that all necessary arrangements had been made and the material has been handed over to the provincial assembly for conducting fair and free elections.

They are Taj Muhammad Afridi, Khurram Zeeshan and Irfan Saleem.

On a previous occasion, Abid Khan Yousafzai and Nisar Khan stepped down from the contest.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly comprises 145 members and a candidate needs at least 73 votes to win the seat. The government benches now have 92 members against 53 of the opposition, suggesting a close fight.

It is noteworthy that the seat of the Senate fell vacant upon the disqualification and de-notification of Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, Senator Syed Shibli Faraz, from being a member of the Senate under Article 63 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

The office of the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate had become vacant on 5th August 2025.
