Windows 11 Update Brings a Cleaner Menu, Faster Settings

WASHINGTON: Microsoft has introduced a cleaner right-click menu in the latest Windows 11 beta update, allowing users to customise its options and make commonly used commands easier to access.

The company said the menu had become crowded and slower over time as applications added their own commands. The new design aims to reduce clutter and improve speed by making the menu simpler when it opens.

The update adds a Customize shortcut at the bottom of the menu. It takes users to a new page under Settings Personalization Context menu, where they can control which options appear.

Users can turn built-in commands, such as Send to and Create shortcut, on or off. They can also enable commands such as Print, which may not have been available in the menu.

Another section allows users to choose which commands added by apps appear directly in the main menu and which are placed in a sub-menu. Users can also hide the sub-menu entirely.

The update offers more control over common actions, including Cut, Copy, Paste, Rename, Delete and Share. Users can choose to display these commands as text options in the menu rather than as icons. They can also move Properties to the bottom.

Microsoft has also made performance improvements to the Settings home page. The company expects the changes to reduce loading times in some cases, but it has not provided figures showing the extent of the improvement.

The changes are included in Windows 11 Beta Channel build 26220.9757 and are being rolled out gradually, meaning not all users on the same build will receive them immediately. Users on the separate 26H1 track will receive build 28020.3292 instead.

Microsoft has cautioned that features tested through beta builds may not appear in the final public release. The updated menu is therefore available for testing, but its inclusion in a future general release is not guaranteed.
