PESHAWAR: Following persistently high flour prices, consumers in Peshawar and Bannu have seen a reduction of Rs100 in the price of a 20-kilogram bag over the past week, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

The latest PBS report showed that the price of a 20kg bag of flour in Peshawar had decreased to Rs3,300 from Rs3,400. In Bannu, the price of the same quantity also fell by Rs100, dropping from Rs3,300 to Rs3,200.

The data showed an identical reduction in flour prices in both cities, although the current price remains higher in Peshawar than in Bannu. Thus, the latest price of a 20kg bag of flour continues to cost Rs3,300 in Peshawar and Rs3,200 in Bannu.

The report, however, did not provide comparable figures for all cities across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Flour prices in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa often remain high due to several factors, including the province’s dependence on wheat supplies from other parts of the country, transportation costs, market demand and fluctuations in wheat availability.

Delays in government wheat releases, procurement and supply management can also affect prices in local markets. In addition, storage costs, market intermediaries and possible hoarding or profiteering may contribute to price increases. The impact varies across districts depending on their access to wheat supplies, local milling capacity and transportation links.
