A major development has emerged in obesity treatment as Foundayo, a new oral alternative to weight-loss injections, has moved closer to approval in Europe.

The European Medicines Agency’s (EMA) relevant committee has recommended granting marketing authorisation to the weight-loss pill developed by US pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The recommendation will now be reviewed by the European Commission, which will make the final decision on the drug’s availability in the European market.

According to a Reuters report, Foundayo has become the second major weight-loss pill to receive backing from European regulators after Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy tablet.

Foundayo contains orforglipron, an active ingredient belonging to the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist class of medicines. The drug works by helping regulate appetite and reduce food intake, potentially supporting weight loss.

The EMA committee has recommended the drug for weight management in adults as well as for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

Analysts expect Eli Lilly could introduce Foundayo in the European Union towards the end of the year, although its availability will depend on the final regulatory decision.

The timeline for its use in treating type 2 diabetes may vary across European countries, depending on decisions regarding reimbursement and insurance coverage.

If approved, Foundayo could offer patients an additional treatment option in pill form, providing an alternative to injectable medicines for managing obesity and related health conditions.
