PESHAWAR: Serious allegations have emerged following the tragic collapse of a private school building in Dir Colony, Peshawar, which reportedly claimed the lives of 35 people, including 33 children and two teachers.
Building Inspector Abdul Quddus Khan, in a video statement, claimed that he had previously issued a notice to school owner Khan Muhammad, warning him about the dilapidated condition of the building and the risks it posed. According to the inspector, he had also directed the owner to vacate the premises due to safety concerns.
Abdul Quddus Khan further alleged that when he took action in accordance with the law and declared the building dangerous, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MNA Asif Khan and MPA Fazal Elahi allegedly harassed him, threatened him and created serious difficulties for him and his family.
According to the building inspector, the alleged pressure was intended to prevent action over what he described as negligence concerning the unsafe structure.
Expressing regret over the loss of lives, Abdul Quddus Khan claimed that the tragedy might have been avoided if his warnings had been acted upon and the school building had been vacated in time, rather than allowing alleged political pressure to interfere with the enforcement of safety regulations.
He also alleged that, during PTI’s tenure in the provincial government, political pressure and threats made it difficult for public officials to perform their duties honestly and independently.
The allegations have raised serious questions about the handling of building safety concerns, the enforcement of regulations and the role of relevant authorities before the fatal incident.
However, the claims against the two PTI lawmakers have not been independently verified. Their responses to the allegations, along with the findings of any official investigation, would be important in establishing the facts surrounding the tragedy.
