PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has decided to conduct safety inspections of private school buildings across the province following the roof collapse at Al-Khair Education System School in Dir Colony, Peshawar.
The Elementary and Secondary Education Department has constituted district-level committees to assess the structural safety of private school buildings and identify potential construction defects and other hazards that could endanger the lives of students, teachers and other staff members.
According to an official notification issued by the department, the committees will conduct surveys and physical inspections of private schools in their respective districts.
The committees have been directed to submit detailed reports, along with recommendations for necessary corrective measures, to the Elementary and Secondary Education Department within three days of their formation.
The District Monitoring Officer of the Education Monitoring Authority (EMA) concerned will head each district-level committee.
Other members will include the relevant District Education Officer, Sub-District Education Officers (SDEOs) and Assistant District Education Officers (ADEOs) responsible for Planning and Development, a representative of the Communication and Works (C&W) Department, and other relevant officials.
The committees will inspect all private school buildings in their respective districts, including those owned by school administrations and those operating in rented premises.
School Buildings to Be Classified by Safety Status
Under the notification, the committees will also assess and classify school buildings according to their safety conditions.
Buildings will be categorised as safe, requiring repairs, needing improvements, or potentially unsafe. The committees will recommend appropriate measures based on their findings.
Authorities will be immediately informed about buildings identified as potentially dangerous so that necessary action can be taken to prevent risks to students and school staff.
The decision follows the roof collapse at Al-Khair Education System School in Peshawar’s Dir Colony, which raised serious concerns about the structural safety of private educational institutions across the province.
The inspection drive is aimed at identifying hazardous structures and recommending corrective measures to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
