How did the shcool roof collapse, and who is responsible for the incident?

PESHAWAR: Alkhair Education System is a private school located on Ring Road in Dir Colony; it was not a single-story building, as some rooms were also built on the roof, where two classrooms were completely demolished.

According to him, students of class 6th and 7th were mostly affected by the roof collapse, whose ages could be between 11 and 14 years; however, the possible number of children in the school and affected classrooms could not be confirmed.

About the possible reasons for the roof collapse, rescue sources said that the condition of the building was not good, which became dilapidated due to recent rains and became the cause of this tragic accident.

This accident happened in a densely populated area around 9:00 am, after which a large number of relatives of the children and local people immediately reached the spot and tried to take part in relief operations along with rescue officials.

There are also reports that rescue officials are facing difficulties in relief operations due to the rush of local people at the scene, while due to narrow roads and heavy traffic, there are difficulties in shifting the injured to the hospital.

Who awarded registration to the school? 

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Private School Regulatory Authority is responsible for awarding NOCs to private schools across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Regulatory body, along with the district Education officer, is responsible for checking every school building before giving registration to private schools. 

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed regret over the loss of life in the incident and expressed condolences to the bereaved families of the children. He also directed that rescue operations be sped up.

Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Faisal Karim Kundi also expressed condolences to the families of the deceased children and directed to provide immediate assistance to the injured. Advisor Information Samar Haroon Bilour expressed regret over the incident of roof collapse of a private school in Dir Colony Peshawar and said that in this difficult hour we share equally in the sorrow and grief of our people.

She directed that the best and timely medical facilities be provided to the injured children and said that the timely relief operations of Rescue 1122 personnel are commendable. 

All resources should be used to safely evacuate the people trapped under the debris.

Four major incidents of school roofs collapsing have already occurred in the country this year, which took place in Sialkot, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Lahore.

On February 21, 2026, a class 8 student died when a shed of an under-construction government girls’ high school collapsed in Sialkot. On May 7, 2026, 4 students died when the roof of a private school classroom collapsed in Dera Ghazi Khan.

On June 30, 2026, 14 children died when the roof of a tuition center collapsed in the Kahna area of Lahore. Apart from this, on July 2, 2026, an 8-year-old child died when part of an under-construction school building collapsed in the Baghbanpura area of Lahore.
