ISLAMABAD: The opposition alliance Tehreek-e-Tahafuz-e-Ain-e-Pakistan and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam directly attacked the PPP, saying, “Most undemocratic actions and the imposition of governor’s rule have been the hallmark of the Pakistan People’s Party in the country’s history.
The alliance said the provincial assembly and government in KP stand on the true and real mandate of the people, and targeting it is an insult to the public mandate. Social media users also attacked the PPP, blaming former President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto along with General Yahya Khan for the separation of East Pakistan and accused President Zardari of trying to create a similar situation.
On the ground, the public reaction has been intense. Social media is flooded with videos and comments against the PPP. People are recalling that this is the third time the PPP is imposing Governor’s Rule in KP. First in 1975 under Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, second in 1994 under Benazir Bhutto, and now the third time in 2026 under Asif Ali Zardari.
Many posts are calling the PPP anti-democratic and calling Governor’s Rule a murder of democracy. Another strong narrative is about double standards.
Citizens are asking why no emergency or governor’s rule is imposed in Balochistan despite a worse law and order situation there, while KP, which has a government with a two-thirds majority, is being targeted.
People are also alleging that terrorism is just an excuse and the real motive is control over the KP throne. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari tried to defend the party, claiming that the federal government wanted to impose an emergency immediately, but the PPP stopped them and asked to find a political solution first. He called the emergency an atomic bomb and said his party saved the situation from getting worse. However, this explanation has not satisfied critics, who point out that just days ago Sindh Minister Nasir Hussain Shah had said PPP would not support governor’s rule or an emergency in KP just because of the long march.
Governor Kundi, in a statement after the approval, said the decision was made for establishing peace in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, prosperity of its people and development of the province. He said, “I am your governor, but beyond that, I want to play my role as a servant of this soil and a protector of your rights.
Let us come together to bring peace and begin a new chapter. “Despite the assurances, the criticism against PPP continues to grow, with many viewing its support for Governor’s Rule as a betrayal of democratic principles.
