ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar has accused the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of adopting “double standards” on terrorism and using calls for political consultation as a delaying tactic.

In a detailed post on social media, Tarar said the federal government had repeatedly sought consultation with political parties on counterterrorism efforts over the past three years, but alleged that PTI had not responded to its proposals.

He claimed that PTI had only recently begun responding to calls for a joint mechanism to combat terrorism because its government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was politically weakened.

Tarar also accused the KP government of failing to demonstrate a strong policy against terrorism, alleging that its approach encouraged the spread of militancy in the province.

He questioned why the KP government did not regularly attend federal Apex Committee meetings or hold its own meetings to review the security situation, as other provinces do.

The minister also asked why the KP chief minister Sohail Afridi and cabinet had not openly condemned what he described as the Afghan Taliban regime’s support for terrorism and cross-border attacks against Pakistan.

Tarar further questioned whether the KP government had fully implemented the National Action Plan (NAP), particularly measures relating to action against illegal activities, illegal Afghan immigrants and capacity building of the police and Counter Terrorism Department.

He also challenged PTI leaders to explain why they did not regularly attend the funerals of security personnel killed in the fight against terrorism or visit security forces and police posts to express solidarity with them.

Tarar alleged that the KP government had failed to give sufficient attention to the governance and development needs of the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).

He said terrorism had not only intensified in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa but had also damaged the province’s economy, blaming the PTI government for what he described as non-implementation of the National Action Plan.

The minister rejected PTI’s calls for collective consultations, jirgas and other mechanisms, describing them as “delaying tactics” rather than meaningful action.

Tarar warned that the state would not allow what he called PTI’s “old rhetoric” to confuse the public, saying the party’s policies had brought Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to the brink of collapse.

He concluded by calling on PTI leaders to provide concrete answers on their position and actions regarding terrorism and security in the province.
