KP Accelerates Work on Drip, Sprinkler Irrigation Systems

PESHAWAR: To improve water use in agriculture, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is accelerating drip, sprinkler and other high-efficiency irrigation systems under the Irrigated Agriculture Improvement Project.

The project focuses on introducing modern, water-saving technologies to improve irrigation efficiency and help farmers make better use of available water. Laser land-levelling units are also being provided to improve the distribution of irrigation water across farmland.

The project includes the development of community irrigation systems, water storage facilities, land levelling and capacity-building activities for farmers and relevant government institutions.  The measures are aimed at strengthening on-farm water management and improving agricultural productivity, particularly in areas facing water shortages.

High-efficiency irrigation systems are being installed to reduce water wastage and ensure more effective application of water to crops. The project also seeks to expand the use of modern irrigation technologies among farmers. Progress on the project, its targets and implementation of decisions taken at the previous meeting was reviewed at a meeting attended by Director General On-Farm Water Management Hayat Khan, Project Director Irrigated Agriculture Improvement Project Muhammad Asif and district officers through video link.

KP Chief Minister’s Advisor for Agriculture Mian Muhammad Umar directed officials to accelerate work on ongoing activities and ensure that the project’s targets are achieved by the end of the year. He said delays or negligence in achieving assigned targets would not be tolerated and directed action against district directors who failed to meet their targets.

He also ordered regular monitoring of the quality and pace of work and called for immediate removal of obstacles affecting project implementation. Mian Muhammad Umar said modern irrigation technologies could play an important role in increasing agricultural production in water-scarce areas by helping farmers irrigate larger areas with less water and meet crop water requirements more efficiently.
