PESHAWAR: The Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has developed a comprehensive plan to improve the continuously declining groundwater level in the province and to control water wastage.
According to official documents, under the new plan, measures will be taken to recycle water from car wash stations and domestic use to make it reusable. It has also been decided to make it mandatory for all new development projects to establish systems for storing rainwater and channelling it underground.
The documents state that more than 4.5 million liters of rainwater has so far been successfully recharged underground across the province. Data has also been collected for suitable sites in 137 districts of the province to store rainwater.
To improve groundwater levels, a total of 62 locations were identified. Of these, 54 projects have been completed and work is progressing rapidly on 4 more sites. To directly channel rainwater underground, 52 recharge wells have been established, out of which 49 are fully operational. Government sources said that by preventing rainwater from being wasted and recharging groundwater reserves, these steps will help improve water levels in the province. They added that the project will also prove crucial in dealing with the potential risk of future water shortages.
