Instagram has announced plans to tighten action against accounts that appear to represent real people but are actually based on fictional characters created using artificial intelligence.

The move comes amid growing complaints from users who believed certain profiles belonged to real individuals, only to discover that the people depicted did not actually exist and that their images or identities had been generated using AI.

Instagram will not completely remove such accounts. Instead, it plans to make their AI-generated nature more clearly identifiable by replacing the existing AI Creator label with AI-Generated Profile.

The platform also said accounts featuring fictional AI personalities that do not carry the appropriate label could face reduced reach, meaning their posts may be shown to fewer users.

According to Instagram, the changes follow feedback from users. The platform began testing the AI Creator label earlier this year as it sought to address the growing presence of AI-generated characters and profiles on the platform.

The updated policy is intended to help users distinguish between profiles representing real people and those created entirely through AI.
