LONDON: Pakistan’s star javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem has qualified for the final round of the javelin throw event at the Commonwealth Games after producing a throw of 78.63 metres in the qualifying round.
Arshad finished seventh among the qualifiers, while India’s Neeraj Chopra secured fifth place with a throw of 79.61 metres.
The defending champion will compete in the final on Friday night as he aims to retain his Commonwealth Games title.
During the three-attempt qualification round, no athlete managed to achieve the qualifying mark of 84 metres. Sri Lanka’s Ramesh recorded the best throw of the round with 82.84 metres.
Pakistan’s other competitor Yasir Sultan failed to qualify for the final after finishing 14th with a throw of 74.36 metres.
Other athletes reaching the final include Bahamas’ Keshorn Walcott with 78.60 metres, India’s Rohit Yadav with 78.37 metres and Yashvir Singh with 78.36 metres. Trinidad and Tobago’s Walcott and Nigeria’s Nnamdi also secured places in the final round.
Arshad Nadeem won the gold medal at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games and will now look to defend his title in the upcoming final.
