PESHAWAR: Heavy rains and flash floods in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa since July 19 have claimed 14 lives and left 19 people injured, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority PDMA said.
According to PDMA, most of the casualties occurred due to the collapse of house roofs and walls, and people being swept away by floodwaters. The deceased include six men, six children and two women. Among the injured are 11 men, 4 women and 4 children.
The incidents were reported in 15 districts including Peshawar, Nowshera, Khyber, Mansehra, Buner, Bajaur, Shangla, Swabi, Lower Chitral, Lower Dir, Upper Dir, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Torghar, Kurram and North Waziristan.
PDMA stated that PDMA, Rescue 1122, district administration and other relevant departments are coordinating, and relief operations are underway. The PDMA has directed administrations of the affected districts to swiftly provide relief supplies to victims.
PDMA Director General has further instructed authorities to speed up rescue and relief activities and ensure immediate support to affected families.
PDMA added that water levels in all rivers and streams across the province are currently normal. However, the spell of heavy rains is expected to continue intermittently until July 23. PDMA has already issued alerts to all district administrations to remain on high alert.
Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from vulnerable tourist areas during the ongoing wet weather.
