NEW YORK: The UN Security Council has passed a landmark resolution jointly presented by Pakistan and Denmark on “Accounting for Crimes Against Peace Forces” by an overwhelming majority, with the extraordinary support of 153 member states.

According to the Foreign Office spokesman, the adoption of the resolution is a clear demonstration of the protection of personnel serving in UN peacekeeping missions around the world and expressions of solidarity with them.

The resolution stresses that attacks on UN peacekeepers, commonly called “Blue Helmets”, are unacceptable and that effective measures against such incidents are essential.

According to the adopted resolution, attacks targeting peacekeepers can be classified as war crimes under international law, so prompt, transparent and credible investigations into such incidents should be ensured.

The resolution demanded that the elements involved in attacks on peacekeepers be brought to justice and strict legal action be taken against them so that such incidents can be prevented in the future.

The landmark resolution also approved the establishment of a new specialized position, the Senior Focal Point, at the UN Secretariat, which will play an important role in monitoring and coordinating cases related to crimes against peacekeepers.

According to the Foreign Office, the adoption of the resolution is a significant achievement of Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to promote active diplomacy and world peace.
