The United States President Donald Trump said that Washington had dispatched a “good team” to Islamabad to take part in talks related to Iran, expressing hope that the negotiations would lead to an agreement preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Speaking to reporters in Washington, Trump said the US delegation includes Vice President JD Vance, adviser Jared Kushner and envoy Steve Witkoff, who are expected to participate in the negotiations in Islamabad.
The US president said Washington’s primary objective was to ensure that Iran does not obtain nuclear weapons. Ninety-nine per cent of what we want is that Iran should not have nuclear weapons, he said, adding that Tehran would not be allowed to develop such capabilities under any circumstances.
Responding to a question, Trump said an agreement that prevents Iran from acquiring nuclear arms would be a positive outcome for the United States.
Trump also expressed optimism that the Strait of Hormuz a key global shipping route would reopen fully soon. He remarked that the US itself does not rely heavily on the strait, though many other countries do.
The US president further claimed that Iran’s military and missile-making capabilities had been significantly weakened, adding that the outcome of the talks would become clearer after the negotiations take place.
