The meeting of the parliament’s special committee will be held at 2:00 pm in the Speaker’s Conference Room, the committee will elect chairman of PEMRA.
The special committee of the parliament includes two members from each the National Assembly and the Senate. Members of the National Assembly, Chaudhry Muhammad Shahbaz Babar, Syed Raza Ali Gilani, are part of the special committee of the parliament.
Senator Sarmad Ali, Senator Syed Ali Zafar are also part of the special committee of the parliament. After the retirement of former Chairman PEMRA Muhammad Saleem, the new chairman of the regulatory body has not been appointed yet.
Under the PEMRA Amendment Act 2023, the authority to appoint the chairman of PEMRA was given to the special committee of the parliament. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will send a panel consisting of five candidates to the special committee of the parliament.
The parliamentary committee will be bound to approve the appointment of the chairman of PEMRA within 30 days of receiving the panel. In case of non-appointment by the parliamentary committee within 30 days, the authority will be transferred to the Prime Minister to appoint the PEMRA chairman.
