KARACHI: The 35th National Games in Karachi are still featuring rivalry among competitors as Pakistan Army strengthens its position by securing 71 gold medals up to this point.
On Tuesday 12 additional gold medals were distributed across track and field competitions. In the women’s javelin throw event, the WAPDA’s Fatima Hussain dominated the field with a throw of 42.38 meters while Pakistan Army’s Faryal Farooq threw 38.21 meters breaking her own previous record and clinching the first position with the gold medal in women’s discus throw. WAPDA’s Ishrat Fatima secured the second position award while HEC’s Khadija secured the third position award.
Faiqa Riaz emerged as the gold medallist in the women’s 200 meters race. Likewise, Aram Shehzadi of WAPDA claimed victory in the race of 800 meters. Moreover, Musarrat Shaheen of WAPDA was the fastest woman in the 400 meters hurdles, while Muhammad Naeem of Army was the fastest overall and therefore won the gold medal in the men’s 110 meters hurdles. They both received golds.
The gold medal in men’s 20km race walking was awarded to Qasim Faiz of the Army. The winning lady in the 5km race from WAPDA was Amara who thus became the champion. Asif from the Army achieved gold in the mens pole vault and Ummat Rehman from HEC claimed the mens triple jump title. Additionally, Waqas Akbar of the Army secured gold, in the mens 800-meter event.
Weightlifting contests kicked off at the Scott Headquarters with the women’s gold medals awarded to Shafaq Waheed (WAPDA, 48kg) Nida Fatima (Army, 53kg) Arjamand Khan (Army, 58kg) and Noor Fatima (Army, 63kg).
In fencing Kareema Parveen, from HEC secured the gold medal in the women’s division by beating Faryal Shahid 15-13 in the match.
Wrestling commenced well with Pakistan’s premier wrestler Inam Butt securing gold on the first day. Additional champions were WAPDA’s Junaid (57kg) Army’s Asadullah (79kg) and Punjab’s Abdullah (70kg).
In squash the women’s team championship was secured by Army after overcoming Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 2-1. Army also took home the men’s team gold by beating WAPDA.
Swimming witnessed Army clinch five gold medals for women and five, for men whereas Sindh and WAPDA took one gold each in the women’s and men’s divisions, respectively. In shooting Army accumulated a total of 11 gold medals with Navy obtaining nine.
Islamabad secured its gold medal in the women’s tennis team category by beating WAPDA 2-1 whereas Army captured the men’s tennis gold against WAPDA.
Medal Table Standings
On the day the Pakistan Olympic Association’s medal tally places Army at the top with 71 gold, 29 silver and 18 bronze medals. WAPDA follows in place with 27 gold, 17 silver and 19 bronze. Pakistan Navy boasts 10 gold, 9 silver and 12 bronze; Pakistan Air Force has earned 5 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze; HEC counts 5 gold, 21 silver and 27 bronze.
Other standings include Punjab (5 gold, 15 silver, 24 bronze), Sindh (2 gold, 12 silver, 21 bronze), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (2 gold, 6 silver, 18 bronze), Balochistan (5 silver, 7 bronze), Railways (3 silver, 13 bronze), Islamabad (1 silver, 2 bronze), Police (14 bronze), Gilgit-Baltistan (2 bronze), and Azad Jammu & Kashmir (1 bronze).
