Unlike type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system damages the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Without insulin, patients with type 1 diabetes have no system to control blood sugar, due to which sugar can accumulate in the blood and increase to dangerous levels.
Instead, the body begins to break down fat for energy, which creates acidic substances called ketones and eventually causes a condition called diabetic ketoacidosis, which can lead to brain swelling, kidney failure, heart attack, and possibly death.
In the latest data presented at scientific sessions 10 out of 12 patients who received the full dose became completely insulin-free after one year.
Brian Shelton, a 66-year-old American, was the first widely reported patient to be “cured” through this method. He went from decades of daily injections to producing his own insulin.
