PESHAWAR: In the last 24 hours, 21 new cases of dengue were reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, bringing the total number of infected individuals to 5,456. Currently, there are 34 hospitalized patients.

According to the health department, the breakdown of cases is as follows: 1,100 cases have been reported from Charsadda, 647 from Peshawar, 635 from Kohat, 469 from Mardan, and 439 from Mansehra.

It is essential to note that these figures may represent regional or district-specific data and are not yet fully confirmed. There could also be discrepancies in the reporting intervals between the media and the health department, as well as variations in the timing of reports and laboratory confirmations of cases.

To prevent mosquito breeding, it is crucial to eliminate standing water in and around homes and neighborhoods. The health department recommends using mosquito nets, repellents, and wearing long-sleeved clothing to stay safe from mosquito bites.

If you experience symptoms such as fever, headache, joint pain, or skin rash, seek immediate medical attention. Early diagnosis and treatment in hospitals can help reduce the severity of the disease.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has asked the health department for an explanation on funds used in anti-dengue awareness drives.

The government inquired about Rs 504 million allocated for dengue prevention and fumigation campaigns from the health department.

The request comes as dengue cases in Peshawar are rising at an alarming rate, highlighting issues of slow response, poor planning, and administrative failure within the health department.

A letter issued by the Chief Minister’s Secretariat to the Secretary of Health and the Director General of Health states that the suburban areas of Peshawar, particularly PK-76, are currently experiencing a surge in dengue cases. Despite the allocation of Rs 504 million for dengue prevention, there has been no visible effective utilisation of these funds.
