ISLAMABAD: The very first supermoon of 2026 will be seen on January 3, amazing the whole world with its great and bright size. This event will mark the end of the supermoons that started in October the previous year.

Scientists have explained that a supermoon is when the moon’s orbit takes it to the closest point to Earth. This makes the moon appear 14% larger and 30% brighter to the naked eye than during the rest of the moon’s cycle.

Astronomers have calculated the peak of the supermoon would take place on January 3rd at around 3:00 PM. But even the night before, a great and big moon would be easy to notice and thus a wonderful chance for sky watchers to see the moon.

This supermoon is known by several names, Wolf Moon, Cold Moon, and Hard Moon among others. Though not widely accepted, these names reflect the January moon of the past.

Regardless of the ground where the supermoon is seen, the surroundings will surely be magnificent because of the supermons that have been going on and taking place in the last months.

First supermoon to light up Pakistan’s sky on October 7

On October 7, Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has announced that the first supermoon of 2025 will grace the country’s skies on October 7.

According to a SUPARCO spokesperson, the supermoon will rise from the eastern horizon shortly after sunset at 8:47 PM and remain visible throughout the night, setting in the west before dawn giving enthusiasts ample opportunity to witness the celestial event.

Astronomical experts noted that the October supermoon will appear 6.6% larger and 13% brighter than the average full moon, particularly stunning in areas with clear, open skies.

“This is a rare opportunity for Pakistanis to enjoy the moon in all its brilliance,” the SUPARCO spokesperson said, urging the public to observe the phenomenon.

SUPARCO further revealed that 2025 will feature three supermoons, the next two expected on November 5 and December 5, with the November supermoon predicted to be the brightest of the year.

A supermoon occurs when the moon’s orbit brings it closest to Earth, making it appear unusually large and luminous.

In a related statement, the Director General of SUPARCO highlighted that the timing of the event coincides with Pakistan’s recent satellite launch, reflecting the country’s progress in space science and technology.
